Chapter 1 The sunshine splashed onto her face as she stumbled out of bed onto the rugged surface of the carpet. Her feet crept slowly toward the darkened hallway and she winced as the cold tiles arrived at her feet. She glanced around nervously but calmed when she saw her uncle had already left. As Emma's hands touched the doorknob she heard a faint footstep not far from the front door. Then a huge clomp. Emma dove under the couch and her breath overtook her as she tried to keep quiet. Soon a loud creak filled her ears she had heard it before. It was her front door. She stayed as still as possible. As she saw her uncle???s boots walk past her face. She felt her heart fill her throat but she did not dare move.
She cursed at herself she should have stayed in bed she could not go to school with a black eye. He had made it clear that night after he got a call from the school, about them continually seeing Emma with a black eye. He had made it extra clear by giving her another.
She had lived with her uncle for 5 years. She got sent there after her mother had ???killed herself???. Emma never believed that she knew her mother was getting better. Her deep purple eyes filled with tears at the thought of her. But she was soon brought back to reality as her uncle walked past again, he stepped into the kitchen. This is my chance she thought to herself. Soon she was on her feet she ran to the door of her room it was closed he knew she was out. Her head raced with thoughts of what he would do to her. But again she was brought back to reality by the footsteps of her uncle. ???Emma I know you???re here come out and I won???t hurt you??? he yelled she could hear the alcohol in his voice. ???Much??? he began to laugh hysterically. She ran to the bathroom and locked the door. The bathroom had been her safe place through many years of drunken nights. The cold peach tiles had become her friend. The dark brown counter her shelter.
Yet again she was brought back to reality by her uncles footsteps. Her small frail body trembled as she heard him approach the door. ???Knock, knock let me in darling??? he said in between laughter. ???GO AWAY??? she yelled as loud as she could. Tears rolled down her face. She knew in her heart that he would stay there till she came out and soon she would get hungry. She felt as though hours had gone by and her eyelids soon became heavy. ???NO??? she thought to herself. ???WAKE UP!!!??? She could not resist, her eyes closed and she fell into a deep sleep. The footsteps of her uncle haunted her in her dreams. Click clack click clack. But then a happy voice echoed from the darkness. She knew that voice, it was her mothers. ???Darling you must always remember that you have a special gift though it may be hidden at times it will always be there when you need it???. For a moment just a moment Emma felt happy but it was short lived. For once again the footsteps haunted her.
Chapter 2 Emma had always been the odd kid that sat in the corner afraid of the world. She was not good at really anything. Life had taken all she had and not been kind enough to share. But she lived on one day at a time. She had never really been any good at making friends. She talked to people and people talked to her but it was only the occasional ???hi??? and ???how are you????. Emma did have a friend once. Heather was her name. They had spent all of grade school together. But life was nice enough to take her also.
Emma often dreamed of her mother and Heather. Both seemed to still cling to her even after death. They confined with her and asked her questions that she could not answer. That was true torture. She could not help them she could not even call their name. It was as if she was mute. Cursed to speak only to those who did not want her to.
Heather had been her life, her happiness. Heather stood by her when all the other slowly drifted away. And Heather had been the only one that she had told about her uncle. She dreaded the thought of telling someone else. She felt as though it was the only secret she had left with heather. The only tie to her beloved past, and without it all she would have is now her uncle, her, and the bathroom.
