A Bad Case of Ringo

3rd Feb 2009 17:35 Kevin always seems to be the least popular of the brothers, and he's always kind of reminded me of Ringo, so this story was born.
Disclaimer: I don't own the Jonas Brothers or the Beatles.
Kevin Jonas looked out at the masses of teenage girls swarming the stage. They all moved and heaved as one, like an ocean of adolecsant adoration. Sometimes he felt like he was drowning in it. He looked over at his younger brothers, and Joe gave him an encouraging smile as he felt the familiar throb of nerves. He started to play the intro for S.O.S. and it was just him ringing out over the stadium now, he didn't have his brothers singing over him like usual. Not that he minded, in a way, he kind of liked his singing to be pushed to the back. He didn't have an amazing voice like Joe, or an unusual voice like Nick. But Kevin loved guitar, and he realised that his biggest thrill was to be on stage, picking out the intro to S.O.S. Sometimes, though. he felt like he was the expendable one. If Nick was the serious one, and Joe was the funny one, where did that leave him? Expendable. He wasn't as good looking as his brothers, although they shared roughly the same features. He must have just got a bad mixture of good features. He couldn't play a million instruments like Nick, or be able to make an entire stadium of girls feel like he was singing personally to them like Joe, and sometimes he felt like he was the Ringo out of this band. Because Nick was definitely the John, the witty, misunderstood musical genius, and Joe was definitely the Paul, the funny, charming unofficial frontman. And that left George or Ringo, and he wasn't the George (quiet, solemn and tenpermental), so that left Ringo. What was Ringo? Kind, laidback, content with sitting in the background, while the others got the attention. It wasn't really the kind of personality that led to being a rockstar. It was by chance that the both of them found fame, or rather, stumbled on it.
Kevin suddenly found his guitar swallowed by the air tight harmonies of his brothers, and the flawless rhythm of the backing band as they thundered into the chorus. When he looked out to the girls again, he was struck by the fact that there were hundreds of ???Marry me Nick??? and ???I love you Joe??? posters, but he could only pick out one or two posters dedicated to only him. One said ???Kevin sends me to Heaven!??? and the other simply stated ???Kevin I wish you were younger!???. He tried to tell himself that it was only because of the fact he was too old for these girls to find appealing, and of course they would favour someone closer to their own age over him, but it still stung. It stung at every concert. Ringo was the oldest Beatle too, just like Kevin... There he went again with the Ringo comparisons! He had a bad case of Ringo, and it was only making him depressed, so he threw himself into the show, thinking only of his performance.
When the concert was over and he'd already run out for three encores, he decided to skip the after-show peptalk from his Dad and went straight to his changing room. He sat in the comfortable chair and reflected on his performance. Not that anyone heard it, he thought bitterly. After a few minutes of wallowing, his mother walked into the room.
???Honey, your father's looking for you.??? she said, eyeing him worriedly.
???Mom???? Kevin asked suddenly, looking up at her. ???Who was your favourite Beatle????
A smile crept over her face. ???Ringo. Why do you ask????
???Why Ringo???? he demanded, ignoring her question.
???Because without Ringo, there'd be no Beatles.??? she said wistfully. ???He was the glue that held them all together, musically and mentally. You could say he was the heart of the band.???
Kevin digested this information. Maybe he was more like Ringo than he thought. He recalled all the times he'd stopped his brothers fighting, or helped them out with a chord progression. Maybe he wasn't expendable. Maybe he was the heart that kept the Jonas Brothers beating.
???Thanks, Mom.??? He said, and hugged her tightly.
She smiled, a little bemused, and he followed her out to join his brothers.
