'This is what I do;
copy and paste image into gimp
right click; new layer
right click on image; layer>>transperancy>>color to alpha
right click on image; layer>>transperany>>alpha to selection
right click;new layer
fill in the new layer with white until it's completely full
now drag the original layer ontop
If you want a nice white glow right click on image; filters>>blur>>tileable blur>>9
And then drag original selection on top.
It sounds complicated, but it gets really easy after the first few tries x]
There may be other ways, but this is how I do it.'
