What it's like being club-leader for 7+ years

I\'ve written this, sort of like a story, but also as knowledge to pass on to future or present leaders, maybe not aware of what they have to expect.
Most of the time, being a club leader feels like:

and sometimes it feels more like:

and sometimes even a bit:

I tried to tell all of those sides in my short story of my 7 years as a leader.

I\'ve now been a club leader for over 7 years, starting in February 2011. When I started it was mainly because I was kicked out of my first club for being \"unactive\" in chat, and figured I wanted to have a club where it shouldn\'t matter what level of active I was..
So... I made the club JailBirds
Why that name? Well.. the story is, that back then there were a lot of standard layouts you could chose from, and I liked the jail-themed one, and made a name to compliment it. It was a quell in a prison suit? I think?
Wanna see cringe material? These were our first ranks..
oh! and this haha!

oh yeah, and let\'s not forget when logos were a thing! xD

I\'m a little embarrassed that I felt the need to sign it..
Anyway, so JailBirds was born!
And after a while, I noticed that other clubs were not using these pre-made layouts.. sooo then I had to teach myself HTML, which I did xD This is like the second big thing that Mara has cudos for getting me to teach myself.
Sidenote, I wasn\'t very good tho.. so instead, I tended to make the boxes in paint or a similar program, and then just insert the images in the layout.

In the beginning we were like 12 members, with 3 of us being actually active in chat. One of them became my partner in crime, but she was traveling a lot. She was not actually an official co-leader, but she was the first to really help me keep the club going.
We continued growing tho, and soon I met my new partner in crime, which co-leaded the club with me for about 4 years, before she sadly turned out to not be the person she claimed to be, and was banned.
Breaking off the text here, to show you some smashing ducks, and also to warn you that the story from here might be disturbing to some.

Just before this, we had also had an incident with a member claiming that another member, which were her sister died, but later revealed she didn\'t, and it was all just a stunt.
This happened two more times with other members doing similar things, but now I\'ve learned my lesson, and I might be a little paranoid..
If you\'re a club leader or admin, reading this, then remember that people can be pretty shady to get attention or items, so do your research before trusting someone, and even then be careful. These were all members who had been with us for years, and we expected nothing. Even my now banned co-leader told me that she couldn\'t imagine people lying about such things, and then merely months later, she did the same herself.
Basically if you\'re a club leader, you have to deal with a lot of stuff, and it\'s the way you handle it which defines you and your club. So be careful.

Luckily, being a club leader isn\'t just about those dreadful moments. You also get to know a lot of great people, and get to be a part of their marapets experience on a daily basis, which is such a blessing <3 Especially if you make a difference, if only a smile!
Another co-leader later, and here were are at 257 members now, which is kind of insane, when you know that all of those are semi active or fully active. That\'s like 1/3 of everyone online at the same time on mara, on a good day.
I\'ve noticed a lot of big clubs have mostly unactive members or members not online at all, and most of those have a leader who has quit or semi-quit, which is sad for the members. But it\'s easy to see that once you stop being active as a leader, the motivation in the club-members will drastically sink as well. So, make sure to keep things happening, even if it\'s just small things, to make the club feel alive.

I also always thought that at one point people would get tired of clubs, and that people would find it \"cooler\" not to be in one, especially before we had updates, and still now clubs are a bit.. broken. Club leaders will know what I\'m talking about xD
All in all tho, I must say it\'s been some eventful and good years. Trying, yes, but also good, and I\'ve learned a lot about myself, about others and about HTML. Most of all, it's taken a lot of work to get where I'm at now. But I love my bird family <3
So if you\'re up for the challenge, go make that club! But you\'ve been warned.
